This is my Weekly Design Inspiration, this is a space where I share some design work that has either inspired me or caught my attention for its execution or concept. The things I feature on here can include (but not limited to) branding, web design, app design, illustration, typography, video games or anything that shows creativity in a unique way.
Yeaaah! Studio are an independent apparel and accessories brand based in Paris, France and is owned and ran by husband and wife Stéphane and Laura Casier. They operate at a small scale where Stéphane creates the illustration and Laura manages the ordering/shipping side of things. And this collaboration has created an enterprise that produces stunning illustrative work which appears on clothing, accessories, pins, books, prints and more. I adore Yeaaah! Studio's work and have a few piece myself including a book full of 3 colour prints, an enamel pin and an A3 print currently hanging above my desk in my living room. I would happily have more products from Yeaaah! Studio if not for the terrible exchange rate of the pound to euros (thanks Brexit).
What is most interesting about Yeaaah! Studio is the variety of style and culture that is injected into the illustrations. From when I initial came across Yeaaah! Studio their main style consisted of mostly skulls and animals and what seemed like heavy inspiration from tattoo art (which is right up my street). However, as time went on they began coming out with more and more work, both in a similar vein as their previous work but also introducing new styles, themes and cultures. These included, Japanese art, retro 50's advertising, 80's inspired posters, nautical themes and much more, not to mention the blending of all these themes.
Whilst juggling all these themes and style Yeaaah! Studio have managed to keep a consistent aesthetic that makes their work unmistakably 'theirs'. A combination of limited colour pallets (normally navy, orange and cream), bold shapes, typography, textures and patterning make for pieces that are all beautifully unique but some how unified. You get a real sense of worldly creatives and people who understand and respect what these styles can bring to their medium. It's really impressive that Yeaaah! Studio can produce such a variety of work while maintaining a brand style. Everything they do feels fresh and unique but at the same time on brand. Also, the hand crafted element of every piece helps pull the work together and gives it a rustic and worn feeling that's totally inspiring.
It's really impressive that Yeaaah! Studio can produce such a variety of work while maintaining a brand style. I feel as thought the fact that they stay true to their brand is accredited, in part, to their success. Having a strong brand influence flowing throughout the artworks makes people more engaged and invested in what's to come. Not to mention that I think they have sublimely influenced my new brand colours, as I have a poster from Yeaaah! Studio above my desk and I think it may have engrained in my mind as a strong brand pallet.
I genuinely find it baffling that one man has the creative capacity to produce such a variety of work while maintaining a coherent brand. I remember when I found out that it was a two person show and I was in awe of the portfolio of work and the professionalism that oozes from every avenue of the business, from a clean e-commerce website, an active social media front and the craft and care that comes with every order. With every order I've received I've also had a collection of stickers as well as some business card like things that I still have in my desk drawer because I can't bring myself to throw away something so finely crafted.
I always look forward to seeing new pieces from Yeaaah! Studio and I know I'm going to love whatever they come out with before I even see it. It's rare that a illustrator will have that effect on me, but when it does in such a way as Yeaaah! Studio it's quite amazing. Currently Yeaaah! Studio's shop is down as Stéphane and Laura are expecting a baby boy! They posted the below on their website while the shop is down. I wish them all the luck in the world going forward and eagerly await their return...
"Two months ago we left Paris to move in the south of France, near Bordeaux, and the reason is that we’ll soon be having our first baby boy! 👪❤️ Since Laura is very close to the due date and I clearly can’t handle everything all by myself, we decided to close the e-shop for a few weeks starting Monday, November 12th. We don’t know exactly when we’ll re-open yet. I guess in a month or so, maybe more… And to be honest, it scares the crap out of us to be closing during the busiest time of the year 😅, but right now we need time for us and the baby to come.
Honorable Mentions
As part of my Weekly Design Inspiration I also like to share some bits and pieces that I have seen which have inspired me in the last week. I have captioned each image with some info and relevant links so you can find out more.
This example of Motion Graphics promoting Office 365 Suite is stunning, blending the worlds of 3D elements with UI design is really interesting. Having glass like textures representing the seamless work flow of the software is really cleaver and an intriguing concept.
Now I thought doing 31 days of drawings for Inktober was difficult, Beeple (Mike Winkelmann) has taken the idea of everydays to another level and has created a piece of 'art' everyday for over 10 years! (currently as of writting this, 4237 days). Looking through the years of work you can see a progression of skill development with a transition into more 3D outcomes. Truly inspiring.
